| You may occasionally find students who challenge you in class by saying something similar to: "Why should I even try to learn all of this stuff?" Here's a helpful quotation from an 1852 Deseret News newspaper editorial that explains the importance of learning all we can in this life. The author of the editorial is not identified, but as Dr. Robert J. Matthews noted [in his book, Selected Writings of Robert J. Matthews: Gospel Scholars Series, p. 110] "it sounds very much like President Brigham Young." Here is the statement: "Some have supposed that it would make but little difference with them whether they learned much or little, whether they attained to all the intelligence within their reach, or not, while they tarry in this world, believing that if they paid their tithing, went to meeting, said their prayers, & performed those duties which were specially commanded, that it would be well with them ...May we always be learning and willing to learn.
